Comfy Reader privacy policy
Updated October 20, 2026. Applies to Comfy Reader version 2.0.23.
Purpose and information used
Comfy uses the content you choose to provide to customize its appearance or read it aloud. This may include selected website text, the loaded website and its address, a visible Gmail message, pasted text, and a PDF you choose. This content can contain personal or sensitive information. After you explicitly open its floating toolbar, Comfy remembers that tab's enabled state in extension session storage and reapplies its tools after navigation where Chrome permits access. Closing the toolbar or restoring the original page disables this behavior; closing the tab removes its enabled state. Other tabs are not automatically enabled. Comfy does not collect browsing history or request your Gmail password or Google account authorization.
Local processing and storage
Formatting, pronunciation rules and PDF conversion run in the extension on your computer. Settings and pronunciation profiles are saved locally in your Chrome profile. Browser storage is not an encrypted vault; other people or software with access to your profile may be able to read it.
Imported website, email and selected-text content is kept temporarily in extension session storage for reuse for up to 24 hours while Chrome remains open. Expired imports are rejected and removed when accessed or during subsequent imports; the expiry is not a guaranteed instant disk-erasure deadline. The reader tab also keeps one bounded refresh copy with a 24-hour expiry in its session storage. Chrome session restoration may restore tab data. Reading history is bounded and held in the reader page's memory, not uploaded to a server.
PDF files are processed locally, not uploaded by Comfy. Exported PDFs and settings files stay wherever you save them. Settings exports omit source text, emails and reading history. Chrome manages its profile storage and backups; Comfy does not implement browser-account synchronization.
Network connections and speech
- Loading a URL requests permission for that website and downloads it directly from that website. The request exposes normal network information, such as your IP address, to that website. Comfy omits browser credentials on its direct download requests. Opening original pages or following external links is ordinary browser navigation.
- Optional local Kokoro receives the text being spoken and the selected voice through an HTTP connection to localhost or 127.0.0.1 on this computer, after you grant access. The service is installed separately and may have its own logging or retention settings. A connection test sends no reading content; a voice preview sends a short sample. Stop requests cancellation when supported, but Comfy cannot erase a separate service's logs. Comfy does not connect to a cloud AI speech provider.
- Browser speech is supplied by Chrome and the selected voice provider. Some voices run locally; others may transmit spoken text to a network service under that provider's policies. Comfy cannot guarantee that browser speech is offline. Choose a local voice or your trusted local Kokoro service for sensitive text.
Sharing and limited use
Comfy does not send reading content or settings to the developer, use analytics or advertising trackers, sell data, or use it for advertising. Content is used only for the reading and listening features you request. Any transfer described above is limited to providing those features. Comfy's use of user data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Your choices and deletion
You choose when to import, format or read content. You can decline website or local-service access and revoke granted access in Chrome's extension settings. Browser speech and pasted text or PDFs do not require Kokoro. Close reader tabs and clear Comfy's extension-origin site data to remove their saved source copies and settings. Restart Chrome to clear extension session imports. Removing the extension removes its Chrome-managed extension storage; separately saved exports, browser backups and Kokoro logs must be managed separately. Avoid sending sensitive material if you are unsure how your selected speech service handles it.
Contact and changes
For support or privacy questions, email comfyreader@proton.me. Opening a support link opens your email application; Comfy does not attach reading content automatically. If you choose to email support, the information you include is sent to the support mailbox through your email provider and Proton Mail. Do not send passwords, private messages, medical records or other sensitive reading content. You may request deletion of support correspondence by email; Comfy's locally stored browser data must be removed on your device as described above.
This policy will be updated when data handling changes.
